Fiume Melfa

Il 25 maggio 2006 a Roccasecca, nei luoghi che videro i duri combattimenti nel maggio 1944 tra le forze canadesi e quelle tedesche, si è tenuta una commemorazione della Battaglia del Fiume Melfa.

In località S. Vito, è stata inaugurata una targa commemorativa di quegli eventi, alla presenza di 28 veterani canadesi della campagna d’Italia, di cui molti avevano combattuto proprio sul Fiume Melfa, inquadrati nei Reggimenti Westminster e Lord Strathona’s Horse.

Per il valore dimostrato nei combattimenti il Maggiore J.K. Mahony del primo venne insignito della Victoria Cross ed il Tenente Ed Perkins del secondo della D.S.O..

La manifestazione, semplice ed emozionante, è stata realizzata grazie al patrocinio del Comune di Roccasecca, all’impegno di Jerry Gangur e Ken McLeod, e dell’Associazione Battaglia di Cassino e del Museo “Cassino War Memorial”.

Dopo il saluto del Sindaco Iacobelli, hanno preso la parola due reduci dei due reggimenti che hanno ricordato, non senza una grande emozione, i combattimenti del 24 e 25 maggio 1944; quindi il saluto dei cittadini di Roccasecca, molto numerosi, che hanno voluto ringraziare i reduci per quanto diedero per la libertà di questa città.

Dopo lo scoprimento della lapide, avvenuto ad opera di un reduce e di un bambino della scuola di Roccasecca, gli alunni della locale scuola elementare hanno letto alcune poesie fatte da loro sul tema della guerra. Alla fine della cerimonia è stata visitata la fattoria di Ricci Carlo Antonio che fu teatro dei combattimenti ed infine tutti sono andati nei pressi del Fiume Melfa dove il Comune ha organizzato un rinfresco.

Alla fine della manifestazione due bambini canadesi hanno simbolicamente gettato dei petali di fiore nel fiume a ricordo dei caduti nella battaglia.

Quindi tutti ci siamo trasferiti al Museo “Cassino War Memorial” dove i veterani, dopo il pranzo nel Ristorante “La Ciociara”, hanno potuto visitare la vasta esposizione fotografica sulla battaglia e soprattutto le molte uniformi, tra cui quelle donate dai veterani canadesi.

Certamente una giornata che non dimenticheremo.

On the 25 May at Roccasecca, one of the places that saw fierce combat between the Canadian and German forces in May 1944, a commemoration of the Battle of the Melfa River was held. A plaque commemorating these events was unveiled in the presence of 28 Canadian veterans of the Italian Campaign, most of whom had fought on the Melfa River as part of the Westminster Regiment and the Lord Strathona’s Horse Regiment. In recognition of bravery demonstrated in these battles Major J K Mahony was decorated with the Victoria Cross and Lieutenant Ed Perkins was awarded the DSO.

This event, simple and emotional, was made possible thanks to the support of the Comune (Council) of Roccasecca, and the commitment of Jerry Cangur and Ken McLeod, the Battle of Cassino Association and the Cassino War Memorial Museum. After the greeting by the Mayor of Roccasecca, Sindaco Iacobelli, two veterans from the regiments spoke of their memories, giving emotional accounts of the battles of 24 and 25 May 1944. This was followed by greetings from the citizens of Roccasecca, present in large numbers, who wished to express their many thanks for the liberation of their town. After the unveiling of the plaque by the oldest veteran present and a young girl from a Roccasecca school, the children from the local elementary school read poems on the theme of war. At the end of the ceremony was a visit to the local farm of Ricci Carlo Antonio which was a theatre of combat, and finally everyone went to the Melfa River where the Comune had organised refreshments.

At the conclusion of the event two Canadian children cast flower petals into the river in memory of those who had died there in battle.

Then all visited the museum “Cassino War Memorial” where the veterans, after lunch at the restaurant “La Ciociara”, visited the large exhibition of photographs of the battles and especially the many uniforms, some of which were donated by Canadian veterans.

Certainly it was a day to remember.
